Dancing with Egyptian Rhythms (Marshall & Shahrzad)
Drums are some of the most important instruments in Arabic music and the rhythms played with them are the heartbeat of belly dance. It is important for every dancer to know these rhythms so that she can understand and express the music when she dancers. In this workshop, Shahrzad and Marshall Bodiker will teach the most important Egyptian rhythms, which are used for belly dance music. With every rhythm, they will teach how to recognize and count it, which dance technique and movements are most appropriate to use, how to improvise to it and then drill several combinations.

Belly dance today comes in a huge variety of styles, all of which can find their roots in folkloric and traditional dancers of North Africa and the Middle East. Learning about these traditional styles is essential to every belly dancer's training and helps to build a strong foundation of technique and musicality. In this workshop, Shahrzad will be sharing some of her favorite Egyptian regional styles: Saidi, Ghawazee and Hagallah.

Mejance: The Oriental Entrance
The mejance (or mise en scene) is the phrase used in Egypt to describe the unique music used at the beginning of a belly dance show, which acts as an introduction and entrance for the dancer. This special kind of music usually includes several exciting changes in mood, speed and style, which are meant to showcase the skills of the dancer and capture the attention of the audience. Shahrzad will be teaching light choreography and combinations to her brand new mejance and focusing in on polishing elements such as flowing arm patterns.
